South African Post Office: In a joint statement, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Postbank have announced the discontinuation of physical cash payment points (CPPs) and cash withdrawals for social grants at Post Office branches. This phased-out process is set to commence in January 2024, with the goal of concluding all payments by March 31, 2023.

South African Post Office: Transition to Non-Cash Channels

SASSA beneficiaries relying on CPPs and Post Office branches for cash payments will now need to use their SASSA Gold Cards at any location accepting bank cards. This includes making purchases at retailers with point-of-sale systems or withdrawing funds at retailers offering cashback services. Additionally, existing Postbank cash withdrawal channels, such as bank ATMs and partner retailers like Boxer, Pick n Pay, Spar, Shoprite, Usave, and Checkers, remain accessible.

Strategic Decision for Customer Experience Improvement

The decision to move away from cash distribution at CPPs was initially announced in 2018. SASSA and Postbank emphasize their commitment to enhancing the overall customer experience. Factors such as increasing cash-in-transit heists, unfavorable conditions at CPP sites, and challenges at Post Offices have driven this strategic shift. By proactively migrating beneficiaries to other National Payment System (NPS) access channels, the aim is to address these challenges.

Anticipated Impact and Beneficiary Usage

As of December 2023, approximately 98% of SASSA beneficiaries already utilize various NPS channels for grant withdrawals. The transition is expected to have minimal impact on beneficiaries, with assurances that the shift will be implemented sensibly to maintain continuity in payments.
