The Social Assistance and Security Agency (SASSA) of South Africa provides vulnerable individuals with social relief of distress (SRD) grants. Applying for and receiving these grants can be difficult and complicated, and not everyone is accepted. For those denied SRD grants, SASSA offers a reconsideration process. This article explains what SASSA reconsideration is, how to apply for it, and what to do if your application has been approved but you have not yet received payment.

Individuals who were denied SRD grants may resubmit their applications for reconsideration under SASSA. Reconsideration is available to anyone who believes their application was denied unjustly or whose circumstances have changed since their initial submission. Individuals can reapply for financial assistance through the reconsideration procedure.

To apply, individuals must take the following steps:

  • Visit the official reconsideration website at https://srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals/appeal for more information.
  • Provide your 13-digit identification number and the phone number you used to apply.
  • You will receive a PIN code via phone, which you will use to access the reconsideration page.
  • Choose the month in which you wish to request reconsideration, and then select a reason for reconsideration that corresponds to the denial reason. Choose “No Alternative Income Source” if you were denied because you have other sources of income.
  • Submit your application and await a response from SASSA.
  • SASSA will evaluate the application and supporting documentation and make a determination. Applicants should expect a response to take several weeks. The response could be completed within 60 to 90 days.

When will SASSA consider applications for reconsideration?

SASSA will evaluate requests on a case-by-case basis. Applications will be reviewed at any time, but applicants should anticipate a response to take several weeks. You should regularly check in with SASSA to ensure that your application is being processed. The SASSA does not have a specific timeline for reconsideration processing.
