SASSA SRD: Has SRD Grant Increased Starting June 2023?

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a government agency that distributes various SASSA grant types of to approximately 18 million South Africans.

On this page, we will discuss the different grant types that SASSA awards, as well as the grant amounts and some basic criteria. You can learn more about any of these grants by clicking on the link next to the grant type.

SRD Grant : SASSA Grant Types

The SRD Grant, also known as the Social Relief Distress Grant, is designed to support South African citizens, asylum seekers, refugees, and special permit holders aged 18 to 60. To qualify for this SASSA grant type, individuals must demonstrate financial need and not receive any other social grants or financial assistance. The SRD Grant provides a monthly amount of R350.

Child Support Grant:

If you require financial assistance in raising your child, you may be eligible for the Child Support Allowance. This grant is available to primary caregivers (parents, grandparents, or older siblings leading the family) who pass the means test. Each child will receive R500 per month. In the case of orphaned children under your care as the primary caregiver, you will receive R750 per month (combining the R500 CSG with a top-up of R250) for each child.

Foster Child Maintenance:

If you are caring for a foster child who has been placed under your care by court order due to circumstances such as abandonment, abuse, neglect or being at risk, you may also qualify for a grant. The Foster Child Maintenance grant amounts to R1 120 per child per month.

Care Dependency Grant: This particular grant caters to individuals responsible for caring for children with severe disabilities who require full-time specialized care. It covers children from birth until they reach 18 years of age and provides an amount of R2 080 per month per child.

Disability Grant:

Individuals who are facing mental or physical disabilities that hinder their ability to work for a duration exceeding six months have the opportunity to apply for a grant. When the condition persists between six and twelve months, individuals can seek temporary disability grants. In contrast, permanent grants are granted to those whose condition surpasses one year or even longer. It is crucial to note that receiving a permanent disability grant does not automatically guarantee lifetime eligibility, although it does extend beyond one year of support. The maximum monthly payout for a disability grant stands at R2 080.

Pensioners Grant:

Another type of assistance available is the Pensioners Grant, specifically allocated for individuals aged 60 and above who find themselves incapable of supporting themselves financially through work. For individuals belonging to the age group ranging from 60 to 75 years old, an amount of R2 080 per month is awarded as part of this grant. On the other hand, those exceeding the age of 75 will be eligible for R2 100 on a monthly basis as part of this assistance program|

Financial Assistance:

Individuals who already receive a social grant but are unable to care for themselves can apply for financial assistance. This additional grant provides funds to pay a full-time caregiver and amounts to R500 per month.

Grant for War Veterans:

War veterans who served in either the Second World War (1939-1945) or the Korean War (1950-1953) and are facing financial difficulties may be eligible for this grant. It provides an amount of R2 100 per month as support.
