Sassa Gold Cards: The Post Office is Crumbling under the Strain 2023/24

Sassa news: Currently, the post offices in Cape Town and Athlone are the ones with long lines. Despite connecting 59.39 million South Africans, post offices face the additional burden of providing SASSA beneficiaries with services. Postbank has put pressure on post offices across the country by sending new SASSA gold cards and instructing beneficiaries to collect them from their nearest SAPO branch if their old ones expired in March.

The official announcement posted on the official SASSA account clearly stated that only those beneficiaries who have gold cards with an expiry date of March will get new ones. However, false information about the discontinuation of SASSA cards in April exacerbated the situation. People with expiry dates in the following months are also going to post offices to get new ones.

According to SASSA news and SAPO officials, only those beneficiaries whose cards expire in March can go to any SAPO branch starting on March 13 to get a new gold card. This announcement has increased the workload on SAPO employees all over South Africa. The number of cards that expired in March exceeded 175000. In comparison, there are only 626 post offices in the entire country.

Many of these few do not offer SASSA gold card exchange services. I met a few beneficiaries at the Cape Town branch who had been waiting in line for hours but had to leave without their new cards. Things are only going to get worse, as 8600,000 cards are set to expire in April, 1.8 million in May, and 2.8 million in June. The number of post offices offering card exchange services is insufficient to handle this massive load.

Conclusion: Sassa Gold Cards

“The post office is crumbling under the strain,” says the social grant. According to Bongani Diako, a Postbank spokesperson, long lines are not uncommon, especially during peak periods. If you need to pick up an old age or disability grant, go to the SAPO branch on Monday/Tuesday; for the SASSA gold card or any other grant, go from Wednesday to Saturday. To deal with the heat while waiting in line, bring a water bottle and wear a cap.
