South Africa’s social grant recipients can breathe a sigh of relief as the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) announces a change in plans regarding expiring SASSA cards for 2024. Despite earlier indications that cardholders needed to renew their cards before December 31, 2023, a recent announcement by Postbank clarifies that current SASSA cards remain valid.

Dr Bongani Diako from Postbank assures beneficiaries that they won’t need to change their expiring SASSA cards for 2024 anytime soon. He emphasizes that the gold cards, despite the expiry date, will continue to be valid after December 31, 2023. This development ensures that millions of social grant beneficiaries can access their funds without any disruption.

In a surprising twist, it seems there was confusion or disorganization within SASSA, leading to a reversal of the initial directive. Postbank is the sole institution authorized to replace SASSA cards, and beneficiaries are urged to ignore misleading reports or scams related to card replacement.

Grant recipients can utilize their SASSA cards at various ATMs across South Africa, including major retailers like Boxer, Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Usave, and Spar. Additionally, the SASSA Moya mobile app offers a convenient way to manage transactions for smartphone users.

As the new year approaches, beneficiaries can look forward to continued smooth transactions, with SASSA payment dates outlined for January, February, and March 2024. It’s important to note that payments may take 2-3 days to reflect, a reminder echoed by the social security agency.
