Program Description: The Fulbright South Africa FLTA Program is a nine-month, ECA-funded, non-degree program for newly qualified and early career teachers with less than seven years of teaching experience to teach isiZulu at an American university for 1 academic year. Candidates must be home language speakers of isiZulu and proficient in English.
While in the U.S. participants can refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency, and extend their knowledge of the society and culture of the United States while serving as teaching assistants for their native language to U.S. students and strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities.
Fulbright FLTA participants will assist in up to twenty hours of language classes a week and are required to enroll in at least two courses per semester, one of which must be in U.S. Studies.
Fulbright FLTA participants will also be expected to facilitate in-person or virtual cultural events, language clubs, and language tables, interacting with their host communities in conversation groups, extracurricular activities, and community outreach projects.
Fulbright FLTA participants must return to their home country to share the skills and knowledge gained from the program.
IMPORTANT: This program does not allow dependents to accompany the FLTA participant, nor does it provide funding for dependents. The grant received is sufficient for only the participant.
Eligibility:
Applicants must:
- Be newly qualified or early career secondary-level teachers with no more than 7 years teaching experience in English, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), isiZulu, American Studies, Journalism and Media, Literature, or a related field. If currently employed, must be able and willing to leave current job to attend the 9-month program
- Be citizens of South Africa
- Be fluent in isiZulu
- Have English-language proficiency in written and spoken English
- Participate in community events and campus activities
- Be creative and self-reliant team players, who can maintain excellent relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
- Be flexible in terms of program activities due to possible COVID-19-related adjustments to the 2023-24 academic year, i.e., teach remotely, assist with teaching responsibilities online, attend virtual sponsored activities
- Return to South Africa following completion of the 9-month exchange
