The incumbent will be appointed at the level of Professor or Associate Professor, if satisfying the requirements at that post level.The Faculty of Law is looking to fill a vacancy in the Department of Mercantile Law. The appointee will be the first incumbent of one of the flagship initiatives of the Faculty of Law: the Gys Steyn Chair in Financial Regulation Law (the “Chair”).

The Chair’s main responsibility will be to contribute to excellence in the Faculty of Law in the area of Financial Regulation Law. The incumbent of the Chair will lecture primarily in particular aspects in the area of Financial Regulation Law, but may also be required to fulfil other teaching responsibilities within the Department and Faculty, taking into account relevant factors.

The incumbent will, furthermore, conduct research that focuses on Financial Regulation Law, provide postgraduate supervision in that area of law, and – with available financial support from the Faculty – establish a research centre in that area of law (the “Centre”).


The incumbent must also contribute to the administrative functioning of the Faculty, and perform other duties as assigned by the Faculty.The Department of Mercantile Law intends to establish a chair and centre in Financial Regulation Law, and a specialised postgraduate master’s level programme (i.e., LLM or similar) in Financial Regulation Law.

The Department also seeks to establish a strong focus on research in Financial Regulation Law, as well as in other areas of Mercantile Law.

Die posbekleër sal op die vlak van Professoraat of Medeprofessoraat aangestel word indien aan die nodige vereistes van daardie posvlak voldoen word.Die Fakulteit Regsgeleerdheid beskik oor ‘n vakature in die Departement Handelsreg.

Die aangestelde sal die eerste posbekleër van een van die vooraanstaande-inisiatiewe van die Fakulteit Regsgeleerdheid wees: van die Gys Steyn-leerstoel in Finansiële Reguleringsreg (die “Leerstoel”). Die houer van die Leerstoel se hoofverantwoordelikheid sal wees om by te dra tot uitnemendheid in die Fakulteit Regsgeleerdheid op die vakgebied van Finansiële Reguleringsreg.

Die bekleër van die Leerstoel sal primêr in bepaalde aspekte op die vakgebied van Finansiële Reguleringsreg doseer, maar daar kan ook vereis word om ander onderrigverantwoordelikhede binne die Departement en Fakulteit na te kom, met inagneming van toepaslike faktore.

Die posbekleër sal verder navorsing doen wat fokus op Finansiële Reguleringsreg, nagraadse studieleiding in daardie vakgebied verskaf en –  met beskikbare finansiële ondersteuning van die Fakulteit – ‘n navorsingsentrum in daardie vakgebied (die “Sentrum”) stig. Die posbekleër moet ook bydra tot die administratiewe funksionering van die Fakulteit, en ander pligte verrig soos deur die Fakulteit toegewys.

Die Departement Handelsreg beoog om ‘n leerstoel en sentrum in Finansiële Reguleringsreg te vestig, sowel as ‘n gespesialiseerde nagraadse meestersgraadprogram (dit wil sê LLM of soortgelyk) in Finansiële Reguleringsreg. Die Departement beoog ook om ¿n sterk fokus op navorsing in Finansiële Reguleringsreg, sowel as in ander vakgebiede van Handelsreg, te vestig.

Duties/PligteLecturing two modules at the LLM (or equivalent) level in Financial Regulation Law and also other law modules;

Developing and coordinating a specialised LLM (or equivalent programme) in Financial Regulation Law
.Actively researching, writing and publishing in Financial Regulation Law
.Postgraduate supervision in Financial Regulation Law or other areas of commercial law
.Establishing and managing a research centre in Financial Regulation Law (the “Centre”)
.Establishing a network of experts (and institutions) associated with the Centre, from amongst others, regulators, practitioners, prosecutors and businesses
.Establishing the Centre as the leading academic focal point in Financial Regulation Law, including hosting an annual conference in Financial Regulation Law and offering short courses
.Contributing to the administrative functioning of the Faculty; Performing such other duties as assigned by the Faculty.

Job Requirements/Pos VereistesRecognised expertise in the area of Financial Regulation Law, whether as an academic or in practice (LLD or an appropriate PhD for appointment as Professor or Associate Professor);An established publication record in the area of Financial Regulation Law (for appointment as Professor or Associate Professor), or commensurate experience in practice; Experience in postgraduate mentorship and supervision (or, in the case of someone with experience in practice, the ability to provide such guidance);Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (or, in the case of someone with experience in practice, the ability to undertake such teaching).
