H3D Drug Discovery and Development
FACULTY OF SCIENCE
The Holistic Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3D) is an interdisciplinary, soft-funded research unit at the University of Cape Town engaged in the discovery of preclinical drug candidates for treating malaria, tuberculosis (TB), and drug-resistant infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. H3D is seeking to appoint a Chief of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Biology with expertise in TB and/or other infectious diseases caused by ESKAPE pathogens on a 5-year contract, starting on 1 July 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position will head the H3D bacteriology teams, providing mentorship to the TB and AMR biologists and interact with the multidisciplinary teams to drive the drug discovery programs. This position will report to the Head of Drug Discovery and be part of the Leadership Team responsible for the H3D’s overall scientific strategy.
Requirements:
- Completion of a PhD in a relevant field or clinician scientist with equivalent qualification
- >10 years of industrial or academic experience working in TB and/or AMR bacteriology
- 6-10 years of industrial or academic experience in leading biology efforts on drug discovery programs, preferably in TB and/or other infectious diseases caused by ESKAPE pathogens.
- A strong track record of relevant publications with the lead authorship in high-impact journals
- Up to date on laboratory technologies and strong bench experience in microbiology and molecular biology
Advantages:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to following:
- Oversee and lead all biology efforts in TB and AMR, including screening, target identification, and validation, assay development, development of disease models, etc
- Lead scientific teams to generate novel and innovative scientific and technical approaches to support and drive drug discovery.
- Participate and lead interdisciplinary drug discovery team discussions and assist in decision-making.
- Collaborate with and influence operations of project stakeholders, partners, and contract research organizations.
- As part of the Senior Leadership Team, establish goals and set priorities for research; create and facilitate opportunities for external collaboration and for funding.
The annual remuneration package, including benefits is between R 961 360 and R 1 131 011.

The Division of Family Medicine seeks to invite applications for the above permanent part-time position. This 20-hour part-time, permanent post (academic clinical pay line; medical officer) will strengthen our team and provide a suitable candidate with an opportunity to pursue a part-time scholarly role in primary care.
Requirements:
- MBChB with a postgraduate qualification in family medicine, such as a postgraduate diploma.
- The minimum experience includes 2 years of post-community service in diagnostic clinical practice (at the primary care level) in the public or private healthcare sectors.
- A year of experience in classroom-based and/or clinical teaching and assessment experience with undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Familiarity with the South African healthcare system.
- Ability to work independently and in a team.
- Organisational ability, planning and effective time management.
- Computer skills related to Microsoft Office 365.
- Registration and in good standing with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner.
Advantages:
- A postgraduate qualification in health sciences education will be advantageous.

Responsibilities:
The main purpose of this position is:
- To provide online and classroom-based teaching in the Postgraduate Diploma of Family Medicine.
- To assist with administering and convening examinations for the Postgraduate programmes.
- To provide a structured teaching programme to Groote Schuur Hospital complex interns during their 6-month Family Medicine rotations.
- To develop and implement an effective CPD offering to Primary Care providers.
The incumbent will report to the head of the division and work closely with convenors in the division to support their portfolios, namely the postgraduate, intern, and CPD portfolios.

The Director Human Resources (HR) Client Services is the head of the client engagement/business partnering function within HR, which forms the core of the HR client centric service model adopted by UCT. HR Client Services (HRCS) is the front-line, client facing section of the HR service and represents HR to the client as part of the end-to-end HR value chain. The key purpose of HRCS is to ensure the alignment and integration of HR as part of the business strategy of UCT by creating human resource agendas and leading HR approaches with the aim of achieving the Universities strategic objectives. At UCT, our operational structure is devolved, encompassing both academic and administrative business units. The incumbent of this role is accountable to the Executive Director for HR.
Requirements for the job:
- A NQF 8 (or above) qualification, preferably in HR or a relevant discipline
- A minimum of 10 years’ broad experience in HR, of which a minimum of 5 years should be at a senior management level in a large scale, complex HR generalist environment.
- Comprehensive exposure and experience of current legislation, policies governing HR practice and industry best practice.
- Experience in creating effective communication platforms to drive effective service delivery.
- Strategic capability (policy/process design & formulation) and outlook.
- Extensive human resource management experience in a unionised environment.

Responsibilities:
- Lead and provide end to end oversight to the HRCS team;

The Department of Student Affairs, through its Student Wellness Service (SWS) at UCT, is seeking a qualified person for the post of permanent psychologist for appointment as soon as possible. The post reportstothe Principal Psychologist, Student Wellness Service and is located within one of the campuses of UCT in a Faculty (e.g. Health Sciences, Science, Law and Commerce Faculty). As a successful candidate you will provide psychological services i.e. assess, intervene, and manage students’ diverse psychological concerns. The functions include, brief assessment consultations, psychotherapy, psychoeducation and supporting mental health promotion drives. The incumbent will also be responsible for delivering short-term clinical and psychoeducational interventions within a student-centered, multidisciplinary, primary mental health care service as a division within the Student Wellness Service. The psychologist is required to work in accordance with the regulations of the professional Board of Psychology and Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), as well as to promote the institutional and departmental mission and values within the Division and the SWS.
Requirements for the job:
- Relevant NQF Level 9 Qualification
- Current registration with the HPCSA as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist
- Two years of experience as a practising psychologist.
- Good interpersonal skills and work ethic
- Personal accountability and commitment to students as clients.
- Strong interest in, and an empathic attitude to working with students.
- Flexibility and adaptability to a variety of presenting problems
- Must be able to work within a multidisciplinary team.
- Must be able to cope with working under pressure in a context that is demanding.

- Participating in policy work and other activities aimed at development and promotion of mental health of the UCT student community.
- Promoting mental health/psychosocial education, awareness, and related life-skills programs in line with Student Wellness Service (SWS) objectives
- Facilitating admission where necessary; in case of mental health/psychiatric emergencies at SWS, to an appropriate hospital / health service facility
- Co-ordinating and/or participating in various portfolios or projects that are set up in the SWS.
- Assisting other colleagues when needed and displaying good, sound teamwork skills.

Innovation Commercialisation Manager
RESEARCH CONTRACTS AND INNOVATION DEPARTMENT (RC&I)
In addition to negotiating research contracts entered into with our wide variety of funders, RC&I fulfills the role of a “Technology Transfer Office” managing Intellectual Property (IP), maturing technologies and ultimately commercialising IP through licensing or spin-off company creation (innovation). We invite applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons for this permanent post.
Requirements:
- NQF Level 9 (Masters) in a scientific or engineering discipline.
- 5 years’ relevant working experience ideally in a new product development environment or technology commercialization environment.
- Formal training in project management or experience in managing large, multi-disciplinary and multi-party projects, in the new product development / innovation space.
- Evidence of ability to control project budgets and expenditure, use of financial systems and associated reporting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of bringing products to market, hurdles faced in different sectors, regulatory requirements, etc.
Preference will be given to candidates who are Recognised Technology Transfer Professionals (RTTP).
Responsibilities
The Innovation Commercialisation Manager (ICM) is responsible for maturing and commercialising technology developed at UCT, which involves three key activities:
- Development and implementation of a commercialisation and/or technology development strategy for all IP in the UCT portfolio that they are responsible for, and supporting the RC&I Stage-Gate process and critical review (e.g. market, commercial viability, techno-economics);
- Facilitating investment design, fundraising and proposal development to secure both internal and external funding to mature technologies through Technology Readiness Levels, within the university environment and/or in conjunction with external partners;
- Commercialising IP by identifying suitable licensees, structuring deals, conducting investment due diligence and participating in the UCT team negotiating the terms of license agreements; or advising entrepreneurs on the creation of spin-off companies and associated business plan development and equity share where appropriate.
The ICM is primarily responsible for the following output: sourcing projects, techno-economic evaluation; market research; commercialization strategy development; fundraising; innovation project management; internal and external stakeholder engagement; marketing and promotion of UCT technologies, commercial and market input into IP management decision gate reviews and supporting IP transactions and sharing of knowledge with regional and national innovation community. The ICM may lead the design, development and implementation of programmes that assist RC&I in achieving its strategic goals.
The ICM works closely with the IP Manager and IP Specialists, the Innovation Investment Manager and has dotted line management responsibility for the New Venture Support Manager and Innovation Project Coordinator. The ICM will oversee the activities of and liaise with Project Managers appointed to manage specific funded development projects, as well as supervise interns in either project management and/or marketing disciplines.
