The application window for 2024 admissions ran from June 15 to July 21, 2023, during which parents and guardians submitted applications for their children.

The GDE has announced that the 2024 Online Admissions Placement Period for Grade 1 and Grade 8 will commence on September 4, 2023, and will extend throughout the remainder of the year until all learners are placed.

Starting from September 4, 2023, parents and guardians with completed applications can expect to receive placement offers via SMS to the contact numbers they provided during the application process. They will then have the opportunity to log in to www.gdeadmissions.gov.za using their credentials to either accept the offer as final or hold it while awaiting other offers, with a seven-day window for making this decision.

The department emphasizes that parents should avoid waiting for placement offers. SMS notifications will be sent out continuously from September 4, 2023, throughout the year. Therefore, applicants may not receive an SMS on the first day of the placement period but should anticipate it at any time during the year.

For parents and guardians who do not receive an SMS, they can log in to www.gdeadmissions.gov.za to check whether a placement offer has been issued or not, reassuring them that there’s no need to panic.

Successful placement in Grade 1 or Grade 8 at a specific school will be confirmed through the SMS notification. In this case, parents or guardians do not need to access the system to accept the offer since the child will be placed at the mentioned school.

In the event that parents or guardians have forgotten or lost their login credentials, they can use the “Forgot Password” feature on the admissions landing page to regain access to the system. Alternatively, assistance is available through the call center at 0800 000 789 or via WhatsApp at 060 891 0361.

The GDE acknowledges that during the placement period, call volumes are high, and their offices experience an influx of in-person inquiries from parents and guardians. They appeal for patience and understanding as their officials work diligently to assist everyone.

Furthermore, the GDE has identified schools that have received an overwhelming number of applications exceeding their capacity to accommodate learners. Approximately 292 primary schools and 277 secondary schools have been designated as high-pressure schools.

Regarding unplaced learners, the GDE underscores that all placements depend on specific criteria and school capacity. Learners who cannot be accommodated at schools they applied to due to capacity constraints will receive transfer offers to the next nearest school with available space. Parents or guardians receiving these transfer offers have the choice to accept or decline them.

The department concludes by reiterating that the 2024 Online Admissions Placement Period for Grade 1 and Grade 8 will commence on September 4, 2023, and will extend throughout the remainder of the year until all learners are placed.
