SRD Grant Now Being Paid : The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has initiated the distribution of Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant payments for November 2023. This crucial financial assistance will be disbursed exclusively to individuals whose R350 grant applications have been approved for the penultimate month of the year.

Payment Timeline

Sassa has scheduled the payment of November SRD grants to commence on Friday, 24th November 2023. The payment process will persist, catering to approved applicants, until the culmination of November on the 30th.

Timing of SRD Grant Payments

A common query among SRD grant applicants revolves around the timing of payments at the end of the month compared to other Sassa grants. Sassa clarified that SRD grant payments occur in the final week of the month because this is when the verification process is likely to be completed.

It is important to highlight that although payments are slated for processing within these dates, the funds may only reflect in the SRD grant beneficiary’s bank account a few days later. The waiting period typically spans 2 to 3 working days post-processing.

Eligibility Criteria and Verification Process

To qualify for the SRD grant in South Africa, applicants must meet specific criteria. They need to be citizens, residents, or special permit holders, without receiving other government support like UIF benefits or NSFAS bursaries. Additionally, their bank account should have a balance below R624 to be eligible for the R350 grant.

Sassa conducts verifications in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs for identity and citizenship checks. Bank details are shared with the Department of Treasury for income verification. Once the bank verification process concludes, the information is handed over to Sassa for grant payment, a process that contributes to the end-of-month payment schedule.

Checking Application Status

Sassa encourages grant beneficiaries to perform a status check to determine when their SRD grant will be paid. In the event of an application rejection, applicants have the option to submit an SRD grant appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).

Impact of the SRD Grant

Initially designed as a short-term temporary grant for the unemployed during lockdowns, the SRD grant has proven indispensable. President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized its role in keeping millions out of poverty, despite its modest value. Consequently, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s announcement of a 12-month extension brought relief to millions. Originally slated to conclude in March 2024, the extension ensures that eligible individuals will continue receiving grants until March 2025.
