Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is actively seeking a Security Officer to join our dedicated team. This critical role ensures the safety and security of our campus community, including students, employees, and visitors. The ideal candidate will bring both professional expertise and a commitment to maintaining a secure environment at SMU.

Key Responsibilities

The Security Officer will play a vital role in maintaining campus security. The responsibilities include:

  1. Access Control Duties
    The Security Officer will manage access points across the campus, ensuring that only authorized individuals enter the premises. This includes:
    • Verifying access credentials of students and staff.
    • Issuing visitor and contractor access cards.
    • Conducting thorough searches of individuals, vehicles, and equipment.
    • Reporting any irregularities or equipment failures to supervisors.
  2. Patrol and General Guard Duties
    Regular patrols of the campus are essential to maintaining a secure environment. The Security Officer will:
    • Monitor strategic points for suspicious activities.
    • Observe and report changes or suspicious behavior to the Control Room.
    • Assist in monitoring CCTV footage for any potential security threats.
  3. Crime Prevention
    Proactive crime prevention is a key aspect of this role. The Security Officer will:
    • Conduct vigilant observation of campus buildings and report any issues such as open or broken windows, doors, or fences.
    • Ensure that any identified risks are promptly addressed and reported to the Control Room.
  4. Emergency Response and Alarm Management
    In the event of an emergency, the Security Officer must be prepared to respond swiftly and effectively. Duties include:
    • Maintaining constant communication with the Control Room using two-way radios.
    • Responding to dispatch instructions and taking necessary actions to secure the situation.
    • Apprehending suspects when required and documenting actions taken.
  5. Traffic Control and VIP Parking
    Ensuring smooth traffic flow and managing parking is another critical aspect of the role. The Security Officer will:
    • Enforce campus traffic regulations to ensure the safety of both vehicles and pedestrians.
    • Direct visitors to designated parking areas and monitor these areas to ensure vehicle safety.
  6. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
    Regular monitoring and reporting are essential for maintaining high security standards. The Security Officer will:
    • Prepare and submit operational reports as required.
    • Communicate effectively with relevant stakeholders.
    • Participate in the ongoing development of security protocols and contribute to enhancing SMU’s institutional culture.

Qualifications and Competencies

To be considered for the role of Security Officer at SMU, applicants must meet the following qualifications and competencies:

  • Education and Training:
    • Matric/Grade 12.
    • Relevant security training and certification.
    • PSIRA Grade C certification.
  • Experience:
    • A minimum of 3 years of security experience, preferably in a tertiary environment.
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • Valid driver’s license (code 8/EB).
    • No criminal record.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong technical knowledge and professional skills in security management.
    • Ability to manage resources and people effectively.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Competence in decision-making, problem-solving, and risk management.
    • A strong commitment to confidentiality and integrity.
    • Physical fitness and the ability to work shifts as required.
