In a remarkable stride forward, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has successfully processed allowance disbursements to eligible students in August 2023, despite navigating challenges associated with its new operational framework.
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has officially confirmed the successful disbursement of allowances to students for the month of August 2023. An impressive total of over R400 million has been disbursed to benefit more than 100,000 students enrolled in TVET colleges.
According to an official statement:
On 25 August 2023, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) accomplished a significant milestone by transferring R405 million to 108,534 beneficiaries currently pursuing studies at Technical And Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges across the nation. This disbursement, intended for the month of September, was effectively facilitated through NSFAS’s direct payment system—a groundbreaking solution introduced to TVET colleges in the preceding November. Remarkably, during the ongoing academic year, the bursary scheme has already allocated an impressive R3.1 billion in NSFAS allowances, supporting a substantial total of 206,539 TVET college scholars.
Navigating Challenges with the Direct Payment System Despite encountering initial obstacles with the newly implemented direct payment system, NSFAS emphasizes its commitment to honoring allowance commitments based on the latest registration data.
While the novel allowance payment approach has faced some hurdles, students have reported concerns related to excessive bank charges for accessing their funds, coupled with other difficulties tied to obtaining their allowances.
