Christmas Relief for Beneficiaries : In a positive turn of events, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has assured beneficiaries of the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant that payments will be processed before Christmas. As the nation gears up for the festive season, this news comes as a welcome relief to over 7.5 million eligible South Africans who have been relying on the grant since May 2020.

Sassa’s Commitment to Beneficiaries

Managed by Sassa, the Department of Social Development’s SRD grant is currently in its third cycle. The grant has played a pivotal role in assisting eligible citizens, refugees, asylum seekers, and special permit holders aged between 18 and 60 with a monthly income below R624.

Financial Boost: Extension and Additional Funding

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, in his Medium-Term Budget Speech in early November, announced a substantial allocation of R34 billion by the National Treasury. This allocation aims to ensure the continuity of the SRD grant program for an additional year, extending its lifespan to March 2025.

New Payment Structure for SRD Grant

In contrast to the fixed payment schedules of Sassa’s permanent grants, the SRD grant’s payment dates were unspecified until September this year. The reason behind this uncertainty is the monthly verification of recipients’ eligibility by the department.

December Payment Schedule

As a notable change, the SRD grant payments are now processed at the end of every month from the 25th. With Christmas falling within this period, the payments for December will be made earlier. Beneficiaries can expect the last SRD grant payment for the year to be disbursed from 18 to 22 December.

Important Reminders for Beneficiaries

Sassa strongly advises recipients to check their SRD status on the official website during the payment week. This will confirm the exact date when the grant payment will be reflected in their bank accounts. Beneficiaries should also be mindful that it takes approximately two to three working days for funds to appear after processing.

Checking Payment Status

SRD applicants can conveniently check their payment, balance status, or pending application status online at www.statuscheck.co.za. Additionally, a phone-based option is available by dialing 080 060 1011 and providing the ID number for verification.

Multiple Collection Options

Sassa provides various options for beneficiaries to receive their R350 grant payments:

  1. Bank Account: Beneficiaries can opt to have the payment directly deposited into their bank accounts, ensuring prompt access.
  2. Cash Send: For those without a personal bank account, the Cash Send option allows access to funds using the ID number and phone number, requiring a cellphone with a registered number and valid identification.
  3. Retail Stores: Numerous retail stores, including Pick n Pay, Checkers, Shoprite, and Boxer stores, facilitate R350 grant collection.

Eligibility Criteria for Christmas Relief for Beneficiaries

The Department of Social Development emphasizes that the SRD grant is available to South African citizens, refugees, asylum seekers, and special permit holders aged 18 to 60 with a monthly income below R624. Eligibility extends to individuals who do not receive other social grants, contribute to or qualify for UIF payments, and have no financial support from any other source.

As the year comes to a close, the timely disbursement of the SRD grant before Christmas serves as a beacon of support for those in need, ensuring a more secure and comfortable festive season for beneficiaries across the nation.
