These bursaries aim to equip students with the necessary skills to become integral members of the air navigation team.

What is an Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO)?

An ATSO plays a crucial role in supporting Air Traffic Controllers in their daily operations. Responsibilities include answering phone calls, utilizing radio transceivers for air traffic communication, and contributing to the efficiency of air traffic management.

18 Bursary Opportunities : Bursary Program Details

As part of this comprehensive bursary program, successful candidates will have the opportunity to undergo training at the ATNS Aviation Training Academy (ATA), located in Bonaero Park, Johannesburg. The program encompasses various aspects to ensure a holistic learning experience.

Inclusions in the Bursary Program

The bursary program covers:

  • Accommodation at a guest lodge arranged by ATNS ATA on a sharing basis.
  • Transport to and from the ATNS ATA, catering to study and practical requirements.
  • Daily meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • A monthly allowance to support students during their training.
  • 10 days of non-academic activities, determined by the study program coordinators.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this bursary opportunity, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years old.
  • Hold a Grade 12 qualification with pure Mathematics and English (HG D or SG C or level 4 upwards).
  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Be medically fit.
  • Attach Grade 12 results.
  • Be willing to relocate anywhere in the country.

Selection Process

The selection process consists of several stages to ensure candidates are well-suited for the role:

  1. Personality Assessment: Assessing the likelihood of success in the specific role.
  2. Ability Testing: Various tests, including English reading and comprehension, mathematical problem-solving, detail perception, spatial reasoning, and diagramming.
  3. Panel Interview: Candidates meeting the assessment criteria will be invited for a panel interview.
  4. Medical Assessment: Mandatory medical assessment and verification.
  5. Bursar Contract: Successful candidates may be offered a bursar contract upon completing all stages.

Bursary Programme Outline

The bursary program is structured into three main phases:

  1. Core Content Course: A theory-based foundation course over a 21-week period.
  2. ATS Rating Course: A practical-based course complementing theoretical training.
  3. ATS Validation: A practical module of On-the-Job-Training.
